about my workTwo central themes prevail in my work: the habits and personalities of the birds and the landscapes of the homes they live in. The natural habitats and timelines expose as much beauty and secrets as the birds themselves. |
All about Shirley Moore Leago ... her BiographyRepresentational painting is the preferred style of Shirley Moore Leago. She loves nature and loves sharing her vision with other people the way she sees it. Shirley sets a mood in her paintings with color, form and imagination. She presents a subject to the world the way she believes nature intended it to be in its natural habitat and feels that the environment the subject is in is just as important as the subject and needs to be presented with the same respect. Shirley was born in Wilson Oklahoma but grew up in Houston, Texas. She majored in fine art and studied graphic design and painting at the University of Houston. Dick Turner the theorist, Loren Adams the Seascapest, Bob Wygant the western master, and Lajos Markos the portraitist, have all had an influence on Shirley’s unique style that is like no other artist. Shirley also enjoys painting other subject matter such as portraits and still life but her main interests rest with birds and animals in their natural habitat. Shirley’s other passion has been teaching Fine Art Painting for over 40 years. She is currently teaching painting at Texas Art Supply Baybrook in the Houston Bay Area and has been teaching there for over 15 years. She claims that an artist never quits learning and by helping other students she continues to grow with every problem that has to be solved. Shirley teaches theory through various styles and media so that the artist can choose how to present his/her work according to his/her own personal style and vision. Shirley has received local and national recognition for her fine art paintings. In 1987 she was recognized for her painting on the Challenger Banner to raise money for the Challenger Center for space science education programs. Dignitaries around the world signed the banner in support for the Challenger Center and in memorial to the 7 Astronauts whose lives were lost. The banner currently hangs in Washington and a copy of the Challenger banner painting was given to the surviving family members of the Challenger tragedy. Shirley’s works and talent have been featured and published in the Washington Post 1987; Deer Park Progress 1995; The Bay Area Sun 1995; Bay Runner 1995, 1996, 1997; The Citizen 1997, 2003; Wild Life Art Magazine 1999, 2000; and Southwest Art Magazine 2008, 2009. Shirley has been a Steering Judge for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Scholarship Program for 28 years. Her painting “Lady’s Choice” was chosen for the cover of the School Art Awards Presentation Program. Shirley has been an art judge for the Kingwood Art Show and the National Competition for the National Society of Artists. Shirley is always doing art demonstrations and workshops for art associations and clubs. The Bay Area Museum Guild in 1997 honored her as the Artist of the Year at the annual Silver Tea with a one woman show. She was a featured artist at the Women’s Health Care Expo 1996 and the Local Color Art Show from 2002 through 2009. In 1984 - 2000 Shirley has shown her works at the Federation of Italian Americans Exhibit. From 2004 - 2007 her works could be seen at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo booth exhibition. Shirley’s paintings and prints are represented by Earth Gallery and LaCharl Gallery In the Park Shops in Downtown Houston and Sunset Gallery in Old Town Spring.

inspirationThe vibrant and iridescent colors of tropical birds, particularly Macaws, are the focal point of my paintings. I am drawn to their human like qualities, their emotional bonds within their social structures, and their delicate balance with nature. My paintings reveal the secret lives of these birds in their natural habitats, far from the prying eyes and hands of man. |
